Welcome to Northampton. I’m Adam, and I want to start with a sound: a knife striking a brass pattern on a leather hide, sharp enough to give a whole trade one of its key words. This town made boots and shoes for centuries, and for a long stretch it made them in astonishing numbers. On this walk we’re following everyday working life through markets, chapels, factories, music halls and, at the end, a museum inside an old prison where the workers finally get center stage. Audio will start automatically when you reach each stop, the map’s in the app, and if you want anything repeated or untangled, just use the chat. Right then - let’s begin where Northampton did its arguing in public. Walk to Market Square; it’s about two minutes.
