The Romans built a military camp on Mons Taber hill in around 15 BC and the Catalan government building stands on the same spot today, which tells you something about how layered Barcelona is. The Gothic Quarter preserves the Roman street grid under medieval stonework. The Eixample, the vast 19th-century grid expansion designed by Ildefons Cerda in the 1850s, was radical urban planning for its time, with chamfered corner buildings and wide streets built for the industrial city that Barcelona intended to become. Antoni Gaudi then used those corner buildings as his canvas, and Casa Batllo and Casa Mila on Passeig de Gracia are among the most formally inventive pieces of architecture anywhere in Europe.
The 1992 Olympics were the second reinvention.
The industrial waterfront was demolished, three kilometres of beach were created from scratch, and the city spent a decade building infrastructure that transformed how it connected to itself. The result is a city that functions both as a dense, walkable historical centre and as a modern Mediterranean coastal resort, which is a difficult combination to pull off. The Barceloneta neighbourhood, still identifiable as a 18th-century maritime grid, sits immediately behind the beach. El Born, east of the Gothic Quarter, became Barcelona's most interesting neighbourhood for food and design in the 2000s as it gentrified around the iron-and-glass Mercat de Santa Caterina.

Before you walk.
Yes, and well in advance during peak season. Tickets for the Sagrada Familia sell out days or weeks ahead in summer and should be booked on the official Sagrada Familia website. Tower access requires a separate ticket. Without a reservation you will not get in on the day, even if you are nearby.
The old city, Eixample, El Born, Barceloneta and Gracia are all walkable from each other. The Metro is excellent for longer distances and T-Casual cards give ten trips across the network. The L3 green line runs the length of the Eixample from Zona Universitaria to Trinitat Nova. Avoid taxis in central areas during peak hours as traffic is slow.
Pickpocketing is a significant issue on La Rambla and around the Gothic Quarter tourist areas. Keep bags in front of you, use zipped pockets for phones and wallets, and stay aware at ATM machines. The city is otherwise safe and lively throughout the day and evening. Keep one earbud out in crowded areas and at road crossings.
Most central Barcelona is flat, which makes it very walkable. Park Guell and the Gracia neighbourhood above it involve a steep climb, best approached from the upper entrance if steep inclines are a concern. The Montjuic area requires a cable car, funicular or bus. The Gothic Quarter has uneven stone streets but no significant gradients.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
