Zaragoza sits at the precise geographical centre between Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia, and this positioning has defined its character for two thousand years. The Romans founded Caesaraugusta here in 25 BC as a veterans' colony for Augustus's soldiers, and the city grid they laid out was so well designed that it formed the skeleton of the medieval street pattern that survives today. The Basilica del Pilar on the Ebro riverfront, with its eleven domes and twin towers reflected in the river, commemorates what tradition holds was the first Marian apparition in history: the Virgin Mary supposedly appeared to Saint James here in 40 AD, before either was dead. The basilica is the most visited religious site in Spain after the Santiago de Compostela cathedral.
The Aljaferia Palace, built by the Banu Hud dynasty in the 11th century when Zaragoza was the capital of the taifa kingdom of Saraqusta, is the finest Moorish palace outside Andalusia.
Its ornamental carving and geometric tilework are extraordinary by any standard, and unlike the Alhambra, the crowds here are manageable. The Aragonese parliament has used it since 1987. La Seo cathedral, built over the main mosque after the Christian reconquest in 1118, combines Romanesque, Gothic, Mudejar and Baroque styles in a way that a building constructed across four centuries would necessarily do, and its tapestry museum holds one of the best collections of medieval Flemish weaving in Europe.

Before you walk.
Zaragoza is on the main Madrid to Barcelona high-speed rail corridor and is served by AVE trains roughly every hour. The journey from Madrid takes about one hour twenty minutes, from Barcelona about one hour thirty. Zaragoza Delicias station is about two kilometres from the historic centre, easily reached by tram or taxi.
Yes, and it is consistently underrated for this purpose. A half-day stopover allows the Basilica del Pilar, the Aljaferia Palace and a walk along the Ebro. A full day adds La Seo, the Roman ruins of Caesaraugusta beneath the city (visible through glass floors at street level), and lunch at one of the restaurants in the El Tubo neighbourhood known for its pintxos bars.
Aragon is known for its lamb, particularly ternasco de Aragon (young lamb with protected designation of origin). Migas, a dish of breadcrumbs fried with garlic, chorizo and pork, is a winter staple. Borraja (borage greens) appears in spring menus in a way you rarely see elsewhere in Spain. The bars around El Tubo near the cathedral serve an Aragonese style of pintxos that is similar to Basque but with local ingredients.
Yes, they are about fifteen minutes apart on foot through the city centre. The Aljaferia is open most days but the parliament sessions can occasionally restrict access to parts of the building, so checking the website is sensible. The Basilica is free to enter and open daily. The towers can be climbed for a view over the Ebro and the city rooftops.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
