D.H. Lawrence came to Cagliari in January 1921 and called it a white Jerusalem because of the way its limestone Castello district rises above the sea on a steep hill, walled and towers intact, looking more like a fortress than a city. The Phoenicians, the Romans, the Pisans and the Aragonese each left a layer, and you can trace the succession by walking from the Tuvixeddu necropolis, the largest surviving Punic burial site in the Mediterranean, through the Roman amphitheatre, up into the medieval towers of Torre di San Pancrazio and Torre dell'Elefante at the gates of Castello.
The Feast of Sant'Efisio on May 1st is one of the oldest continuously celebrated processions in the Mediterranean.
Thousands of people in Sardinian traditional costume walk seventy kilometres over four days from Cagliari to the sanctuary at Nora and back, carrying the effigy of the saint who supposedly saved the city from plague in 1656. The rest of the year, Cagliari divides between its four historic neighbourhoods: Castello on the hill, Marina along the port, Stampace to the west and Villanova to the east. Each has its own character and its own pace.

Before you walk.
The Castello district sits on a significant limestone hill and the streets leading up to it from Marina are steep. There is a lift (ascensore panoramico) from near the waterfront that takes you up to the Bastione di Saint Remy terrrace, which helps considerably. The lower neighbourhoods of Marina and Stampace are relatively flat.
Cagliari Elmas Airport is about eight kilometres from the city centre and served by direct flights from across Europe, particularly from Italian cities and Ryanair's European network. The airport bus (ARST) runs regularly into the city. Ferries from Genoa, Civitavecchia, Palermo and Naples also connect Cagliari to the Italian mainland.
Sardinian food is distinct from mainland Italian cooking. Look for malloreddus (small shell-shaped pasta with sausage ragu), culurgiones (stuffed pasta with potato and mint), porceddu (roast suckling pig) and bottarga (cured mullet roe, which the Sardinians have been producing since Phoenician times). Cannonau red wine and Vermentino white are the local choices.
Cagliari is generally a safe city for pedestrians. The main tourist areas around Castello, Marina and the waterfront are well populated during the day. The standard precautions apply: be aware of your surroundings, particularly in quieter streets after dark, and keep one earbud out if you are crossing roads or navigating busy areas.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
