A few words on Lyon

France's second city, but first for everything edible.

Two Roman emperors were born in Lyon. The Lumiere brothers invented cinema here in 1895. Paul Bocuse spent six decades making it the uncontested gastronomic capital of France. The city has a habit of generating things that spread everywhere else. Yet it sits in the French imagination as somehow less than Paris, which suits it perfectly. Locals call children 'gones' and themselves Lyonnais, and they cook duck livers and tripe in tiny traboules-flanked bistros without much interest in what Paris thinks.

The traboules are the city's great secret.

These covered passages connect buildings through interior courtyards across Vieux Lyon and La Croix-Rousse, built so silk workers could carry fabric through the rain without damage, then used by Resistance fighters in the 1940s to move through the city undetected. Above everything, Fourviere Hill carries the Byzantine confection of Notre-Dame basilica, visible from almost anywhere. The hill is known locally as 'the hill that prays.' La Croix-Rousse, steeply terraced above the old town, is 'the hill that works.' The city has always been comfortable with that duality.

Lyon FAQ

Before you walk.

April through June and September through October are the sweet spots, with good weather and reasonable crowds. Avoid early December if you are not specifically there for the Fete des Lumieres on the 8th, as the city fills completely and prices spike. Winter tours are fine but expect shorter days.

The metro, trams, and funiculars cover the city thoroughly. Vieux Lyon is served by the D metro line, which deposits you right at the base of the old town. The funiculars up to Fourviere run frequently and are included in standard transit tickets. The old town itself is fully walkable and mostly pedestrianised.

Vieux Lyon and La Croix-Rousse are hilly and cobbled, which makes them less accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The Presqu'ile peninsula between the rivers is largely flat and easier to navigate. The funiculars are a good alternative to the steep climbs on Fourviere, with accessible options available.

Lyon's bouchons are the essential eating experience: traditional bistros serving quenelles de brochet (pike dumplings), andouillette sausage, or gratineed onion soup. The Halles de Lyon-Paul Bocuse market is worth a morning visit for charcuterie and cheese. A good rule is to go where locals eat on a Tuesday lunch rather than where the tourist office points you.

4G coverage is reliable throughout central Lyon, Vieux Lyon, and along the Presqu'ile. In some of the deeper traboules the signal drops briefly, but tours download for offline use so that does not affect your experience. Free wifi is available at major tourist sites if you want to top up before heading out.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
