The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
Naples was founded by Greeks in the eighth century BCE as Parthenope and refounded a century later as Neapolis, the new city. It was ancient when Rome was still an idea. It became one of the great cities of Magna Graecia, then a Roman playground, then the capital of a succession of kingdoms: the Duchy of Naples, the Kingdom of Naples, and finally the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which it ran until Italian unification arrived uninvited in 1861. During the Bourbon period, Naples was the second-largest city in Europe after Paris, with a quarter-million inhabitants and an opera house, the San Carlo, that opened in 1737 and is still producing performances. The street pattern in the old centre still follows the rectangular grid laid down by the ancient Greek founders.
The city's underground is as inhabited as the surface.
Beneath the streets, a network of caves and tunnels created by centuries of tufa stone quarrying runs under the entire historic centre. During the Second World War, these spaces were used as air raid shelters, and the inscriptions carved into the walls by those sheltering families are still legible. Above ground, the Spaccanapoli, the long straight street that splits the city in two and follows a Greek-era decumanus, is lined with churches, palazzi, street shrines, and pizza shops in a density that rewards slow walking.

Before you walk.
Yes in the main tour areas, but stay alert. The historic centre around Spaccanapoli, the Cathedral, and Piazza del Plebiscito is well-trafficked and generally safe for visitors. Be watchful of mopeds in narrow streets, which move fast and close to the kerb. Keep your phone in a secure bag rather than in your hand in crowded markets. The city's reputation for crime is significantly exaggerated relative to the experience of most visitors.
Naples Centrale train station connects to Rome in about 70 minutes on the high-speed Freccia trains and to the Amalfi Coast via the Circumvesuviana regional railway. From the central station, Line 1 of the Metro connects to Piazza Dante and Toledo, both useful starting points for the historic centre. The city also has a funicular network climbing the hills to the Vomero neighbourhood.
Pizza is the obvious answer, and deservedly so. For a quick stop, a pizza fritta (fried pizza folded in half) from a street stall on Via Pignasecca costs almost nothing and is excellent. Sfogliatelle, the shell-shaped pastry filled with ricotta and semolina, is the right breakfast choice. For lunch, try pasta e fagioli or spaghetti alle vongole in any of the neighbourhood trattorias off the main tourist streets.
Download the tour beforehand and it will run offline. Coverage in Naples city centre is generally good, though some of the narrower lanes in the historic centre and underground tunnels have weaker signal. Wi-Fi is available at most cafes if you need to top up data during the day.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
