The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
Zurich keeps surprising people who arrive expecting only banks. The Romans built a tax collection post here called Turicum where the Limmat River flows out of Lake Zurich, and the site has been handling other people's money ever since. In 1519, a priest named Huldrych Zwingli climbed into the pulpit of the Grossmunster church and launched the Swiss Reformation, which is the kind of thing you do when the scenery is too beautiful and you have too much time to think. The old town that grew from those medieval walls still sits on both banks of the Limmat, low and stone and deeply itself.
What the city does not advertise is its eccentricity.
Nearly 45 percent of Zurich's residents were born outside Switzerland, which shapes the food, the nightlife, and the conversation in ways that the pristine window displays on Bahnhofstrasse do not suggest. The street itself, laid out in 1867 over a filled-in canal, is one of the world's most expensive retail corridors, but three minutes' walk into the side streets of Kreis 4 or Kreis 5, the old industrial district, you are in a neighbourhood of independent galleries, record shops, and bars that close at whatever time feels right.

Before you walk.
The ZVV tram and bus network is one of the most punctual in Europe and covers the entire city. A day ticket covers all trams, buses, and the S-Bahn within the city zone. The Old Town is compact and best explored on foot, but trams are useful for reaching Kreis 4 or 5 from the Altstadt.
Yes, the historic core on both sides of the Limmat is very compact. The old town climbs slightly up the hillsides from the river, so expect some gentle gradients. The riverside walkways between the Limmat quays are flat and pleasant. The city is exceptionally well-maintained underfoot, with smooth pavements throughout.
Download the tour on Wi-Fi before going out and it will work offline. Mobile coverage in Zurich is excellent throughout the city. If you are roaming from outside Switzerland, note that Swiss carriers are not part of the EU roaming framework, so check your data costs before relying on a mobile connection.
Zurich is expensive. A sit-down lunch in the Altstadt will typically cost 25 to 40 Swiss francs for a main course. A better strategy is the Zurich staple of a Wurst from a street stand with bread and mustard, which costs around 7 to 10 francs and tastes exactly as good. Bakeries in the side streets are another affordable option.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
