A few words on Granada

The last Moorish kingdom, still burning in the walls.

On January 2, 1492, the last Nasrid emir Muhammad XI handed the keys of Granada to Ferdinand and Isabella, ending nearly eight hundred years of Muslim rule in Iberia. The Alhambra, the palace complex on the hill above the city, is what the Nasrids left behind. The Court of the Lions, with its marble fountain and 124 columns, and the Hall of Ambassadors, where the geometry of the ceiling maps the seven heavens of Islamic cosmology, were built in the fourteenth century under Yusuf I and Muhammad V. They are the most technically and aesthetically refined buildings in medieval Europe, and they have been drawing visitors since the moment the Catholics took possession.

The city below the Alhambra has its own logic.

The Albaicin, the old Moorish residential quarter on the facing hill, is a labyrinth of narrow lanes and whitewashed houses that climb to a viewpoint called the Mirador de San Nicolas, from which the Alhambra is framed perfectly against the snow of the Sierra Nevada. Sacromonte, the cave-dwelling neighbourhood to the east, is the heart of the local Roma community and the home of a particular style of flamenco called zambra, descended from music that was already here when the Catholics arrived.

Granada FAQ

Before you walk.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons: comfortable temperatures, good light for the Alhambra's intricate tilework, and manageable crowds. July and August are hot, sometimes above 35 degrees, and the Alhambra queue is at its longest. Winter can be cold and occasionally snowy, but the city is quiet and the free tapas tradition continues regardless of weather.

Yes, and well in advance. The Alhambra limits visitor numbers strictly, and tickets for the Nasrid Palaces sell out weeks ahead during peak season. Tickets are timed, so you need to arrive at your designated slot. The outdoor gardens (Generalife and Alcazaba) are easier to access on shorter notice. Book at the official Alhambra website, not third-party resellers.

Quite hilly. The Albaicin and Sacromonte neighbourhoods involve steep, narrow lanes that climb continuously. The Alhambra hill itself is a sustained climb from the city. Good walking shoes with grip are important. If the hills are a concern, the city operates a minibus service (C31, C32, C34) that serves the historic upper areas.

Yes, though the Albaicin lanes are narrow enough that you should keep one ear open to traffic and other pedestrians. The tourist areas around the Cathedral and the Alcaiceria market can be busy, and you should keep your phone close in crowded areas. The overall atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming.

Download your tour on Wi-Fi before setting out and it will work offline. Signal can be weak in some of the narrow lanes of the Albaicin, which are surrounded by old stone walls. If you need the map function, download the relevant area for offline use before your visit.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
