A few words on Basel

Art fairs, LSD, and an airport that belongs to two countries.

Basel sits where France, Germany, and Switzerland share a corner, and its airport, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, is built entirely on French soil but jointly operated by Switzerland and France. The city has always been comfortable with this kind of arrangement. In 1661, the Kunstmuseum Basel became the first public art collection in the world when the city bought the Amerbach Cabinet. Every June, Art Basel turns the city into the most concentrated art market on earth, with galleries from fifty countries selling work in the convention centre while smaller fairs and installations spread through the old town.

Albert Hofmann worked at the Sandoz pharmaceutical company in Basel and synthesised LSD on November 16, 1938.

He did not know what he had made until 1943, when he accidentally absorbed some through his fingertips and cycled home to experience the world's first LSD trip. That date, April 19, is now observed internationally as Bicycle Day. The Rhine divides the city into Grossbasel, the historic core on the south bank, and Kleinbasel on the north. The Basel Minster, dating to consecration in 1500, sits on a terrace above the river and its terrace is one of the best viewpoints in Switzerland.

Basel FAQ

Before you walk.

June brings Art Basel, which is exciting but expensive and crowded. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking, with good weather and no major crowds. Fasnacht, the Basel carnival, runs for seventy-two hours in February or March starting at 4am Monday morning, and is unlike any other carnival in Europe: masks, small groups, lanterns, and sharp political satire. Winter is cold but manageable.

Basel is on major rail routes connecting Zurich (fifty minutes), Berne (sixty minutes), and Paris (three hours by TGV). EuroAirport is served by tram from the Swiss rail network, though it sits in France. The main station, Basel SBB, is about a twenty-minute walk from the Minster and old town. Trams cover the central areas efficiently.

Yes. Several bridges connect Grossbasel and Kleinbasel, and the Rhine ferry services (Fähre) use a rope and the river's current to cross without an engine, which locals use for commuting and visitors enjoy as an experience. Swimming in the Rhine is common in summer: locals carry a waterproof bag called a Wickelfisch to put their clothes in.

The old town on the Grossbasel side has some steep streets near the Minster terrace and the cathedral hill. The tram network covers most flat areas and has low-floor vehicles. Kleinbasel on the north bank is flat. The riverside promenade on both banks is paved and accessible.

Basler Läckerli, a spiced honey biscuit with candied peel and almonds, is the city's signature confectionery, sold in tins at most pastry shops. Zwiebelwahe is a savoury onion tart popular in autumn. The city sits at the junction of Swiss, French, and German food cultures, so restaurants cover all three traditions. Rhine-side restaurants in summer have outdoor terraces worth seeking out.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
