A few words on Buenos Aires

Founded twice, still arguing about the first time.

Buenos Aires was founded in February 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza and abandoned six years later after constant conflict with the Querandies. Juan de Garay refounded it permanently on June 11, 1580, on the south bank of the Rio de la Plata, the world's widest river. The settlement grew into a trading city, then the capital of the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata, then the capital of the Republic of Argentina from 1880. The Portenos, the people of the port, absorbed waves of Italian, Spanish, Jewish, and later other immigration from 1880 to 1930, and became something distinct from both Europe and the rest of Argentina.

The 9 de Julio Avenue is the widest avenue in the world, fourteen lanes of traffic divided by planted medians, with the Obelisco, a 67-metre concrete needle from 1936, at its main intersection.

The Obelisco was built in thirty-one days for the city's fourth centenary and has been controversial, beloved, graffitied, lit in various colours for national events, and occasionally used as a measuring device for crowd estimates ever since. Teatro Colon, the opera house that opened in 1908, is considered one of the finest in the world for acoustic quality and is worth walking past even if you cannot get inside.

Buenos Aires FAQ

Before you walk.

March through May and September through November are the most pleasant seasons, with mild temperatures and the trees of Palermo at their best. Summer (December through February) is hot and humid, reaching 35 degrees Celsius, and many locals leave the city. July and August are cool and sometimes rainy, but the city is quiet and good for unhurried exploration.

The Subte, Buenos Aires's underground metro, covers the main central districts and is efficient. The San Telmo, Plaza de Mayo, La Boca, and Microcentro areas are walkable from Linea A and C stations. La Boca is close to Boca station but the walk between La Boca and San Telmo is best done by taxi for safety reasons. Remis (private hire taxis) are reliable and inexpensive.

The Caminito strip in La Boca is safe during the day and well-policed. The neighbourhood around it is less tourist-oriented and warrants more attention if you wander away from the main pedestrian area. Standard city caution applies: keep phones in pockets, be aware of your surroundings, and take a taxi between La Boca and other neighbourhoods rather than walking through unfamiliar streets.

Argentine beef is the starting point: a bife de chorizo or bife de lomo at a traditional parrilla, with chimichurri and a glass of Malbec from Mendoza. Empanadas from a panaderias, particularly the baked (al horno) rather than fried version, make a good walking lunch. Medialunas, the Argentine croissant, are sweeter and softer than French versions and are the standard breakfast at most cafes. Dulce de leche appears in or on most desserts.

Tipping is expected in restaurants, typically around ten percent. Taxi drivers do not expect tips but rounding up the fare is common. At parrillas and traditional restaurants, a 'cubierto' (cover charge) is often added to the bill automatically. Prices in Buenos Aires have been volatile due to inflation, so ATM withdrawals and currency exchange rates can change significantly between planning and travel.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
