A few words on Flensburg

Where Germany runs out and Denmark begins.

Flensburg sits seven kilometres from the Danish border at the innermost end of a Baltic Sea fjord, and it has spent eight hundred years being argued over by the two countries on either side of it. Danish settlers founded it by 1200; German merchants arrived shortly after. The city was Danish for centuries, then briefly occupied by Napoleon's troops, then handed to Prussia after the Second Schleswig War in 1864. In 1920, a plebiscite divided the old duchy: the northern villages chose Denmark, the city of Flensburg chose Germany by a margin that is still a point of local discussion. Today a significant Danish minority runs its own schools, churches, and library within the city, and the border fifteen minutes north is barely noticeable.

The old merchant quarter along the harbour, a strip of sixteenth and seventeenth century warehouses and counting houses, tells the story of how Flensburg got wealthy.

The rum trade made it. Ships brought cane sugar from the Danish West Indies (now the US Virgin Islands) to be refined and distilled in Flensburg, and the resulting rum became one of the most traded commodities in northern Europe. At its peak in the early nineteenth century, dozens of distilleries operated here. Only one active rum producer remains today, A.H. Johannsen, but the warehouses along Grosse Strasse still carry the memory in their proportions.

Flensburg FAQ

Before you walk.

May through September offers the best walking weather, with mild temperatures and long days common to all of northern Germany. The harbour area is particularly pleasant in summer when the sailing boats are in. The city is quiet in winter but the historic centre is small enough to walk comfortably at any time of year with appropriate clothing.

Direct trains connect Flensburg to Hamburg in about two hours and to Kiel in about 50 minutes. From the station, the historic centre and harbour are about fifteen minutes on foot downhill. If you are driving from Denmark, the border crossing on the E45 is quick and unstaffed most of the time.

Yes, the harbour and the old merchant quarter along it are flat and compact, easily covered in an hour or two. The historic centre above the harbour involves some gentle climbs through old streets. The Nordertor gate and the streets around it are the natural focal point of the old town.

Flensburger Pilsner, brewed here since 1888 in the distinctive flip-top bottles, is the obvious answer and a good one. The rum heritage is worth pursuing too: the Rum Museum on Grosse Strasse tells the story of the trade, and some bars carry the A.H. Johannsen rum. The Danish food influence is also present; try smorrebrod, the open-faced Danish sandwiches, at any cafe near the harbour.

Download the tour in advance and it will work offline. Coverage in Flensburg is reliable throughout the city centre. If you are crossing into Denmark from here, your EU roaming plan continues to work in Denmark without any change.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
