Turku was the capital of Finland long before Helsinki existed. Pope Gregory IX mentioned the town as Aboa in 1229, and for the next six centuries it served as the most important city in the Finnish lands: the seat of the bishop, the centre of trade, the gateway between Sweden and Russia. Then in 1827, a fire that started in a sauna spread through the wooden city and destroyed about three-quarters of it. The Russian authorities, who controlled Finland at the time, took the opportunity to move the capital to Helsinki, where it was closer to St Petersburg and easier to manage. Turku rebuilt, in stone and on a grid designed by Carl Ludwig Engel, the same architect who designed central Helsinki, which gives both cities a family resemblance.
What stayed is considerable.
Turku Castle, at the mouth of the Aura River, has been standing since the 1280s. Turku Cathedral, a few hundred metres inland, is a thirteenth-century stone basilica, and the only medieval basilica church in all of Finland. The river divides the city neatly into two halves, and its banks are lined in summer with restaurant boats that are anchored there permanently, which is a Turku tradition with a pragmatic logic: the boats can leave in winter before the ice comes.

Before you walk.
Turku is about two hours by train from Helsinki, with regular services throughout the day. There is also a ferry connection to Stockholm, which arrives at the Turku harbour and is an experience in itself. The city centre is compact and walkable from the main train station.
Very. The city centre is flat, and the Aura River provides an easy orientation point. Turku Castle is a 20-minute walk from the Cathedral, which is a natural pairing for a half-day tour. The city is small enough that you can cover its main historical sites without public transport.
Turku has a cafe culture that earned it the nickname 'Paris of Finland', which is ambitious but points at something real. The Old Market Hall on the south bank of the river is a good starting point for local produce. In summer, the restaurant boats along the Aura serve classic Finnish food including salmon soup and grilled whitefish. Mustamakkara, a local blood sausage served with lingonberry jam, is an acquired taste that locals take very seriously.
Download your tour beforehand and it will work fully offline. Mobile coverage in Turku city centre is excellent. If you are arriving on the ferry from Stockholm, there may be a brief transition period for your data plan when switching between Swedish and Finnish networks.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
