A few words on Cologne

A cathedral 632 years in the making, and beer that must be drunk cold and fast.

The Cologne Cathedral was started in 1248 and the builders ran out of money around 1560, leaving a massive construction crane rusting on the unfinished south tower for three centuries. It was finally completed in 1880 and was, for eleven years, the tallest structure on earth. It survived the World War II bombing raids that destroyed sixty percent of the city in 1942 alone, either through Allied targeting or architectural mercy depending on whose account you read, and its twin spires are still the first thing visible when arriving in the city by rail. Inside, the Shrine of the Three Kings, a golden reliquary from the 12th century containing what are claimed to be the remains of the Magi, makes Cologne one of the major pilgrimage sites of northern Europe.

Cologne was a Roman colony from 50 AD, capital of Germania Inferior under Emperor Nero, and the city whose name gave English the word 'cologne': the fragrance has been produced here since Johann Maria Farina opened his shop in 1709, and his name is still on the building on Obenmarspforten, twelve generations later.

The perfume was carried across Europe in flasks shaped like rifles and bullets so soldiers could bring it from occupied Cologne without arousing suspicion. It was called Eau de Cologne because that was where it came from.

Cologne FAQ

Before you walk.

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer the best walking weather. The Carnival in February is spectacular but extremely crowded and requires advance booking for accommodation. The Christmas markets in late November and December transform the area around the Cathedral and are among Germany's most atmospheric. Summer is warm and active with Rhine cruises and outdoor events.

Cologne Bonn Airport is fifteen kilometres from the city centre and served by an S-Bahn train to Cologne Hauptbahnhof in about fifteen minutes. Cologne's main station sits directly beneath the Cathedral, which is the most dramatic arrival in Germany by rail. ICE high-speed trains connect Cologne to Frankfurt (fifty minutes), Brussels (two hours) and Amsterdam (two hours and forty minutes).

Kolsch is a pale, dry, top-fermented beer served only in 200ml Stangen glasses. The custom is that your waiter replaces it automatically until you cover your glass with your coaster to signal you are done. Brauerei Frueh am Dom on Am Hof, Brauhaus Sion on Unter Taschenmacher and Gaffel am Dom on Alter Markt are all traditional brewpubs near the Cathedral. Do not order anything else.

The historic centre, Cathedral, Old Town (Altstadt), Roman-Germanic Museum and the Rhine promenade are all within a comfortable fifteen-minute walk of each other. The city is flat and well signposted. Hohenzollern Bridge and the Deutz district across the Rhine are a short walk. The outer ring of Romanesque churches spans a wider area but is manageable with a tram or two.

Entry to the Cathedral nave is free, with masses held multiple times daily. Climbing the south tower (533 steps) requires a paid ticket. The Treasury, holding the Shrine of the Three Kings and other medieval reliquaries, has a separate entry fee. The Cathedral can be very crowded with tour groups in the morning, so arriving before 9am or after 4pm makes a significant difference.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
