A few words on San Diego

Where California's story started, under 300 days of sun.

San Diego has the geography of a paradise and the history of a frontier. The Kumeyaay people called the bay Kosa'aay and lived here for thousands of years before Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo anchored offshore in 1542. The first European settlement followed in 1769 with the Presidio on the hill above Old Town and Mission San Diego de Alcala in the valley below, making San Diego the oldest European settlement in California, a fact that most visitors discover only after assuming the opposite. Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis was built in a Ryan Airlines hangar here in 1927 before his solo transatlantic flight.

The city's approximately 200 canyons and hills divide it into neighborhoods with dramatically different characters.

Balboa Park, built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, contains 17 museums, the San Diego Zoo, and a collection of Spanish Colonial Revival buildings so theatrical they were partially designed as permanent infrastructure to replace what were intended as temporary exposition structures. The Gaslamp Quarter downtown occupies blocks of Victorian commercial buildings from the 1880s that survived the city's various redevelopment phases. La Jolla sits on sea cliffs above coves where leopard sharks congregate in summer shallows and harbor seals haul out year-round.

San Diego FAQ

Before you walk.

San Diego's weather is reliably good almost year-round. October through April tends to have the clearest skies, as the June Gloom marine layer keeps mornings grey from May to July. Summer temperatures are mild by inland California standards, rarely exceeding 27 degrees Celsius near the coast. Rain is minimal; most of the year's precipitation falls between November and March.

The MTS Trolley connects Old Town, downtown, and the Convention Center area. The city is otherwise fairly car-dependent, though Uber and Lyft are abundant. Balboa Park is walkable internally once you get there. The Gaslamp Quarter and waterfront are within walking distance of each other downtown. A car helps for reaching La Jolla and Point Loma.

Old Town San Diego and the Gaslamp Quarter are flat and easy. Balboa Park has gentle grades. The coast paths at La Jolla involve cliff-top walking with some uneven surfaces. Point Loma has steep sections near the Cabrillo National Monument. Wear comfortable shoes; San Diego's hills are real even if the weather makes you forget them.

Yes, and many visitors do. Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach are all accessible and family-friendly. La Jolla Cove is excellent for snorkeling and watching marine life. Water temperatures average around 17 to 20 degrees Celsius in summer, cold enough to warrant a wetsuit for extended swimming but fine for a quick dip.

San Diego is generally very safe for walking tourists. The Gaslamp Quarter and Balboa Park see some homeless encampments but are not dangerous. Petty theft around busy tourist areas is the main concern; keep your phone secured when not actively using it. La Jolla and the beach communities are relaxed and low-risk. Traffic in downtown can be heavy but is orderly.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
