A few words on Ceske Budejovice

The original Budweiser, and a square to prove it.

Premysl Otakar II founded Ceske Budejovice as a royal city in 1265 on a flat plain where the Vltava and Malse rivers meet, and he gave it a main square so large that it still feels oversized by any reasonable standard. The Premysl Otakar II Square is one of the biggest in the Czech Republic, lined with Renaissance and Baroque arcaded houses that replaced the ones burned in a fire in 1641. The Samson Fountain at its centre, finished in 1727, is the largest in the country at seventeen metres across. The Black Tower at the corner, a 72-metre bell tower from the 1570s, can be climbed on clear days for views across South Bohemia.

The beer connection is genuine.

The town has brewed since its founding, and in 1895 the Czech joint-stock brewery was established here, later becoming Budvar. The dispute with the American Anheuser-Busch over the Budweiser name has been running in courts around the world since the late 19th century. In most of Europe, Budvar wins those cases and markets its beer as Budweiser. In the United States it cannot. In the pubs around the main square, only one version is on tap and it has been since 1895.

Ceske Budejovice FAQ

Before you walk.

Yes, the Budejovicky Budvar brewery on Karoliny Svetle offers regular guided tours that include the production hall, cellars and a tasting. Tours run most days and should be booked in advance during summer. The tour lasts around ninety minutes and ends with fresh Budvar poured directly from the cellar tanks.

Direct trains from Prague Hlavni Nadrazi take around two hours and run frequently throughout the day. RegioJet and Czech Railways both serve the route. Buses (FlixBus, RegioJet) are also available and slightly faster. The bus and train stations are both a short walk from the main square.

May through September offers the best weather for exploring the old town and the riverside areas. The arcaded streets are pleasant in light rain, which South Bohemia sees in spring. Late summer has various festivals and outdoor events around the main square. Winter is quiet but atmospheric, particularly around Christmas when the square hosts a traditional market.

Very. The historic centre is flat, compact and largely pedestrianised around the main square and the arcaded streets. The walk from the train station to Premysl Otakar II Square takes about ten minutes. The river islands and parks to the south are a pleasant extension for afternoon walking.

Hluboka nad Vltavou castle, a 19th-century Gothic revival chateau modelled on Windsor, is thirteen kilometres north and served by buses from the city. Cesky Krumlov, one of the most visited historic towns in Central Europe, is twenty-two kilometres south and takes twenty minutes by bus. Both make natural additions to a South Bohemia itinerary.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
