From 1714 to 1837, the Elector of Hanover was also the King of Great Britain. George I spoke no English when he arrived in London, communicated with his ministers in French, and spent much of his reign longing to return to Hanover. His successors continued the personal union until 1837, when Victoria inherited the British throne and the Salic law that prevented women from ruling Hanover severed the connection. This continental connection with the British crown is mostly forgotten in both countries now, but it gave Hannover a European significance and a cosmopolitan self-image that lasted well into the 19th century.
More than ninety percent of the city centre was destroyed in 88 Allied bombing raids between 1940 and 1945.
The ruins of the Aegidienkirche on Osterstrasse have been left unrestored as a memorial since 1945, and a bell donated by Hiroshima in 1985 hangs in the open tower. What survived or was reconstructed includes the Herrenhausen Gardens, one of the finest baroque garden ensembles in Europe, laid out in the 17th century on the western edge of the city. The Grosser Garten has a 72-metre fountain that is the highest in Germany, a hedge maze, an outdoor theatre where concerts still run in summer, and formal parterres that have been continuously maintained since the 1720s.

Before you walk.
Hannover Airport is well connected by S-Bahn to the city centre in about fifteen minutes. The main station is a major ICE hub with direct high-speed connections to Hamburg (one hour), Berlin (one hour twenty), Frankfurt (one hour forty) and Cologne (two hours). The station is central and most historic areas are walkable from it.
The Herrenhausen station on the U-Bahn line 4 and 5 is directly at the Grosser Garten entrance, about four kilometres from the city centre and a ten-minute ride from the central Kröpcke interchange. The gardens are large and a full visit takes two to three hours. Entry to the Grosser Garten requires a ticket; the Berggarten botanical garden next door has a separate entry.
The Rote Faden is a four-kilometre red line painted on the pavement connecting 36 significant sites in the city centre. A free booklet available at the tourist information centre on Ernst-August-Platz gives context for each numbered stop. It is an easy self-guided walk that takes about two hours at a comfortable pace and works well alongside an AudaTours audio guide.
Hannover has a relatively modest food identity compared to some German cities, but the market hall (Markthalle) on Karmarschstrasse near the old town has a wide range of local and international food stalls. The Leineschloss area and the old town around the Marktkirche have good traditional German restaurants. For a local specialty, look for Leineschinken, a cured ham from the Hannover region.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
