National Artist Nick Joaquin wrote that Manila was 'a city of layers', and it is impossible to argue with him. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi planted the walled city of Intramuros here in 1571, turning a Malay settlement on the Pasig River into the capital of the Spanish East Indies. For more than two centuries, the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade ran silver from South American mines west to Asia and silks east to the Americas, making this small river city one of the most consequential trading posts on Earth. Almost none of the original colonial fabric survived the Second World War: Manila was the second-most destroyed city of the war after Warsaw, reduced to rubble in the fighting of February and March 1945.
What was rebuilt carries that history in its foundations rather than its facades.
Intramuros, the old walled city, was partially reconstructed and still shows its Spanish bones in the grid of streets and the massive walls of Fort Santiago, where the national hero Jose Rizal spent his final hours before his execution in 1896. Rizal Park, the great civic space along the Bay, connects this colonial history to the post-war republic that grew around it. The Pasig River, once a commercial artery connecting the bay to Laguna de Bay, is now undergoing restoration after decades of industrial damage.

Before you walk.
Intramuros is in the heart of Manila, near Rizal Park and accessible by taxi, Grab (the local rideshare app), or the LRT Line 1 with a short walk from Central station. Traffic in Manila is infamous, so build extra travel time into your plans. The Grab app is the most reliable and transparent way to hire a car in the city.
The main tourist areas of Intramuros and Rizal Park are generally safe for visitors during the day. Keep your phone and valuables in a secure bag, not a back pocket, and be aware of your surroundings in busier market areas. Walking at night in unfamiliar areas is best avoided; use a rideshare app instead.
Light, breathable cotton clothing is essential. The heat and humidity make synthetic fabrics uncomfortable. A hat and sunscreen are important even on overcast days. Note that some churches and heritage sites require covered shoulders and knees, so carrying a light scarf or wrap is practical.
Download the tour on Wi-Fi first and it will run offline. Local Philippine SIM cards from Globe or Smart are very affordable and offer good data plans if you want connectivity throughout the day. Coverage in the Intramuros and Rizal Park area is strong.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
