The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
James Duane Doty bought a thousand acres of swamp and forest on a narrow strip of land between two lakes in 1836 and persuaded the Wisconsin territorial legislature to name it the capital, partly through charm and partly through land deals that were not fully above board. He named it after President James Madison, who had died that June and was not available to object. The Wisconsin State Capitol that now anchors the centre of the isthmus took from 1906 to 1917 to build, and state law restricts the height of all buildings in the downtown to protect its dome's sightline, which is why Madison remains one of the few American cities where the Capitol is genuinely the tallest thing you can see from the centre.
The University of Wisconsin, established in 1848, has always been the other force shaping the city.
The campus runs along the southern shore of Lake Mendota, and the relationship between the university and the city is unusually integrated: State Street, the pedestrian mall that connects the Capitol to the campus, is lined with independent restaurants, bookshops, and music venues in a density that reflects decades of student-and-faculty foot traffic. The university's 25,000 faculty and staff make it the city's largest employer, and the research output from the UW medical and engineering schools feeds a significant biotech presence.

Before you walk.
Madison Dane County Regional Airport has direct connections to Chicago, Minneapolis, and other hubs. By car, Madison is about 80 miles west of Milwaukee and 150 miles northwest of Chicago. Amtrak's Empire Builder stops in Milwaukee, from which buses connect to Madison. Within the city, the Metro bus system covers the main areas, though most tour routes are walkable.
The isthmus between the lakes is very walkable and mostly flat. State Street and the Capitol area are the natural heart of any tour and are completely pedestrian-friendly. The lakeshores have paved paths in both directions. Madison is a cycling city, so the infrastructure for non-car movement is well-developed.
Cheese curds, either fresh and squeaky or battered and fried, are the Wisconsin baseline and are available at the farmers market and most restaurants. A custard from Michael's Frozen Custard on Monroe Street is a local tradition. For something more substantial, the Old Fashioned restaurant on the Capitol Square specialises in Wisconsin supper club classics including Door County fish boil and beer-braised bratwurst.
Download the tour on Wi-Fi beforehand and you can walk without a data connection. Coverage throughout downtown Madison is reliable. The UW campus area also has extensive free Wi-Fi if you need to connect during the walk.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
