Beneath Nottingham there are more than eight hundred sandstone caves, hand-cut over centuries into the rock on which the city sits. Some are medieval tanneries, some Victorian slum dwellings, some wartime shelters, and one of them, in a pub called Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, may have been serving ale since 1189 when Richard I's crusaders supposedly stopped off on their way to the Holy Land. The pub is partly carved into the castle rock. This is what Nottingham is like: things that should not still exist have somehow kept going.
Notts County, founded in 1862, is the oldest professional football league club in the world.
Across the city, Nottingham Forest won the European Cup back to back in 1979 and 1980 under Brian Clough, which remains one of the most improbable achievements in football history. The Lace Market is the other kind of pride: a district of four and five-storey Victorian brick warehouses where the nineteenth-century lace industry ran, now converted to apartments, galleries, and bars. The lace trade made Nottingham synonymous with its craft across Europe the way Sheffield meant cutlery or Wedgwood meant ceramics.

Before you walk.
East Midlands Railway runs frequent services from London St Pancras in about ninety minutes. Nottingham Station is a short walk or tram ride from the Old Market Square and Lace Market. The NET tram connects the station to most areas. From the station, the Castle is about fifteen minutes walk uphill, passing through the old town.
Yes. The City of Caves attraction under Broadmarsh takes you into the sandstone tunnel system with guided tours that explain the medieval and Victorian history of the caves. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem on Castle Road also has caves accessible from the pub interior. Check opening times as the City of Caves schedule varies.
The main tourist areas including the Old Market Square, Lace Market, and castle grounds are safe and well-frequented. The city centre is lively during the day and early evening. Standard urban awareness applies at night, particularly in areas away from the main squares. The Lace Market gets quiet after 6pm on weekdays.
Nottingham has a good independent food scene particularly in the Hockley and Lace Market areas. The Nottingham Evening Post used to identify the city as having the highest density of independent cafes in England outside London, though the numbers shift. Try one of the pie shops near the market square for a traditional East Midlands filled pastry. The city's Goose Fair in October traditionally means nougat and toffee apples.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
