A few words on Caen

William's city, rebuilt from rubble, still pointing toward peace.

William the Conqueror built his castle here around 1060, and the Château de Caen still stands at the center of the city, its walls enclosing a park and two museums. William also ordered the construction of the Abbaye aux Hommes, completed in 1063, where he was eventually buried -- though French Revolutionaries disturbed the tomb and only a fragment of his femur was recovered and restored to the abbey church. His wife Matilda founded the Abbaye aux Dames on the opposite side of town. Both abbeys survive. Charlotte Corday was born in this part of Normandy and was educated in Caen before traveling to Paris to assassinate Jean-Paul Marat in his medicinal bath in 1793.

In the summer of 1944, Caen was almost entirely destroyed.

The city was the objective of British forces pushing inland from the D-Day beaches, and the battle for it lasted from June through August, with Allied bombing and German resistance between them reducing most of the built environment to rubble. Around 35,000 civilians sheltered in the quarries beneath the city as their streets burned above them. The reconstruction took until 1962 and replaced the medieval street plan with wider roads and more functional architecture. What survived -- the two abbeys, the castle, the Church of Saint-Pierre -- survives in relief, like islands.

Caen FAQ

Before you walk.

Late spring and summer are most pleasant for walking Norman streets -- the climate is mild and oceanic, summers are rarely hot, and the long June evenings give extra walking time. June 6th (D-Day anniversary) brings commemorations and visitors to the region, which adds historical atmosphere but also crowds around the Mémorial and the nearby beaches.

Caen is about 2 hours from Paris Saint-Lazare by direct train (Intercités service). The station is centrally located and the castle, abbeys, and Mémorial are all accessible from it. By car, Caen is 200 km from Paris via the A13 motorway. The city is also a common base for visiting the D-Day beaches, which are 20-30 km to the north.

Yes. The D-Day beaches (Omaha, Gold, Sword, Juno, Utah) are 20 to 40 km north of Caen, accessible by bus, rental car, or organized tour. The Mémorial de Caen runs bus tours to the beaches from its site. A day in Caen combined with a beach visit is the standard Normandy itinerary and works well.

Yes, but allow a minimum of 3 hours for the museum alone -- it is large, comprehensive, and emotionally serious. The Mémorial is located about 3 km north of the city center and is best reached by tram (Line 2 from the center). Combining a morning city walk with an afternoon at the Mémorial is a full and meaningful day.

Normandy produces some of France's best dairy and cider, and the local cuisine reflects this. Tripes à la mode de Caen -- beef tripe slow-cooked in cider and calvados -- is the city's signature dish, dating back centuries. Camembert and Livarot cheeses from the surrounding region are excellent. Calvados apple brandy is the local spirit, and Norman cider is served in restaurants that know what they are doing.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
