The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
Nantes made its fortune in the 18th century from the slave trade, was for centuries the capital of the Duchy of Brittany, and gave the world Jules Verne, who was born here in 1828 on the Ile Feydeau, a former island in the Loire estuary now embedded in the city fabric. All three of these facts shape how the city sees itself, and all three are addressed with unusual directness. The city officially recognised its slave trade history in 2012 with the Mémorial de l'Abolition de l'Esclavage on the quayside, one of the few such memorials in Europe that does not minimise what it commemorates.
The Île de Nantes, a former industrial island in the Loire on which shipyards operated for over a century, is now the most ambitious urban regeneration project in western France.
The Royal de Luxe street theatre company is based here, as is the Machines de l'Ile, one of the most peculiar and compelling attractions in France: enormous mechanical animals inspired by Jules Verne and Leonardo da Vinci, built to be ridden and walked through by visitors. The 12-metre mechanical elephant, powered by steam and operated by a crew of three, carries forty passengers through the island's streets on timed rides.

Before you walk.
Nantes is about 2 hours from Paris by TGV. The city centre and Île de Nantes are well served by the Chronobus network and the TAN tram, which runs on four lines. The city has an excellent bike hire system (Bicloo) and dedicated cycling lanes that make cycling a practical alternative to walking for getting between different tour areas.
Yes, booking in advance is recommended, particularly for the elephant rides which have limited capacity per departure. The site operates seasonally with longer hours in summer and reduced hours in winter; check the Machines de l'Ile website for the current schedule. The workshops where new machines are under construction are also open to visit and are as interesting as the finished machines.
The city centre around the Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne and the Cathedrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul is flat and walkable. The area has been largely pedestrianised in the past decade, which makes it pleasant to explore on foot. The Île de Nantes is across the Loire by pedestrian bridge and involves some flat riverside walking. Comfortable shoes are sufficient.
Nantes sits where Brittany meets the Loire wine region, which means excellent seafood alongside some of the finest muscadet white wine in France. The Bouffay district in the old town has a concentration of good restaurants. Look for moules marinières with local muscadet, beurre blanc sauce (invented in the Loire valley), and for dessert, gateaux nantais, a rum and almond cake that has been made here since the 18th century.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
