Praia sits on a series of volcanic plateaus called achada on the southern coast of Santiago Island, the largest of the Cape Verde archipelago. The location was deliberate: the original settlement sat lower at the coast and was too exposed to pirate raids, so the city moved uphill and has stayed there ever since. Charles Darwin stopped here on the HMS Beagle in January 1832, making Praia his first landfall after leaving England, and was struck by the contrast between the barren volcanic landscape and the clear light above it.
Cape Verde was uninhabited when the Portuguese arrived in 1462, which makes it one of the few places in the world with no indigenous population to displace.
The islands became an important station in the Atlantic slave trade, a function that shaped the mixed Creole population and the Kriolu language and the music called morna, made famous abroad by Cesaria Evora, who was born in Sao Vicente but gave the sound its international voice. Praia has the administrative weight of a capital without the self-consciousness: its market, its colonial-era grid in the old Platona district, and its informal seafront life all operate on their own terms.

Before you walk.
Nelson Mandela International Airport serves Santiago Island with connections to Lisbon, the Netherlands, and several other European cities, as well as inter-island flights. From the airport, the city centre is about 7 kilometres by taxi. Inter-island ferries and flights connect Praia to other Cape Verdean islands including Sao Vicente and Sal.
The central Platona and Fazenda areas are generally safe in daylight. Praia has seen some petty crime in less touristed outer districts, so stay aware in unfamiliar neighbourhoods and keep valuables secure. Walking in groups and avoiding the display of expensive equipment reduces risk.
Portuguese is the official language and used in government, education, and formal contexts. Kriolu, a Portuguese-based Creole specific to Cape Verde, is the everyday spoken language. English is not widely spoken outside hotels and tourist facilities. Some knowledge of Portuguese is helpful but not essential for a guided audio tour.
Cachupa, a slow-cooked stew of hominy corn, beans, vegetables, and meat or fish, is the national dish and eaten for breakfast as cachupa refogada (fried with egg the morning after) as often as at dinner. Grilled freshly caught fish is excellent near the port. Grogue, the local sugarcane rum, is both very cheap and better than its price suggests.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
