Antofagasta was founded in 1868 on the edge of the Atacama Desert, the most arid nonpolar place on earth, where years can pass without a drop of rain. Chile seized the city from Bolivia in 1879 during the War of the Pacific, and the copper and saltpeter fortunes that followed built a city of surprising grandeur along a harsh coastline. On Plaza Colon, a clock tower erected by the British community in 1912 replicates London's Big Ben, a testament to the English engineers and merchants who came here following the mines.
Standing at the waterfront, you are looking at one of the world's great natural harbors, backed by copper-colored cliffs and the silence of an endless desert.
Drive 16 kilometers north and the land throws up La Portada, a natural sea arch rising from the Pacific as a cathedral of layered rock. At the Tropic of Capricorn monument a few kilometers outside the city, a solar calendar marks the exact astronomical line with a precision that feels right for a city where the sky is almost always perfectly clear.

Before you walk.
Yes. Antofagasta sits in the Atacama Desert and averages just a few millimeters of rainfall per year, making it one of the driest urban areas on the planet. This means you can visit at almost any time of year with near certainty of clear skies, which also makes the region famous for astronomical observation.
Cerro Moreno International Airport is about 45 km north of downtown. Taxis and shared transfer services operate from the arrivals hall. The journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic, and pre-booked transfers are generally more economical than airport taxis.
Being a Pacific port city, Antofagasta excels at seafood. Fresh fish, ceviche, and shellfish from the cold Humboldt Current waters are staples. The Mercado Central has stalls serving cazuela de mariscos (shellfish stew) and piure, a local sea creature that divides opinion but is considered a delicacy.
Antofagasta is a gateway to the Atacama but the most famous desert sites, including the Valle de la Luna and the geysers at El Tatio, are closer to the city of San Pedro de Atacama, about 300 km to the northeast. Day trips from Antofagasta are possible but long; staying in San Pedro for the desert interior is recommended.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
