A few words on Zagreb

Two medieval towns that finally agreed to share.

Zagreb was two towns for most of its history and never let you forget it. Kaptol, on the eastern hill, was the church and the cathedral, its power rooted in the diocese established in 1094. Gradec, on the western hill, was the merchants and craftspeople, protected by the Golden Bull of 1242 after the Mongol invasion forced the Hungarian king to grant it civic autonomy. The two communities, separated by a stream called the Medveščak and connected by a staircase called the Blood Bridge because of the fights that broke out along it, were not united until 1850 under the city's first mayor. Walking the Upper Town today you can still read both settlements in the street patterns, the cathedral on Kaptol's hill and St Mark's Church with its mosaic-tiled roof of Croatian heraldry on Gradec's.

The Lotrščak Tower has fired a cannon at noon every day since 1877, and you can watch it from the Strossmayer Promenade, which offers what the locals call the best view in Zagreb: a panorama of the red-roofed Lower Town below and the green slope of Medvednica mountain behind.

The Ban Jelačić Square at the foot of the funicular connecting the two towns is the commercial and social center, named for the 19th-century governor who, among other things, abolished serfdom in Croatia. The Dolac market above the square has sold fresh produce since 1930 and remains the best place in the city to watch locals shop.

Zagreb FAQ

Before you walk.

Spring from April to June and autumn from September to October are the most comfortable, with temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees and the city at its most sociable. July and August are warm with occasional thunderstorms. Zagreb's Christmas market, held from late November through December, has been voted among the best in Europe and the illuminated Upper Town is worth visiting in its own right.

The world's shortest public funicular, just 66 meters long and in continuous operation since 1890, connects Ilica Street in the Lower Town to Strossmayer Promenade in the Upper Town and costs about 0.66 euros. You can also climb the staircase on Radiceva Street. The Upper Town is compact and walkable once you are up, with the Cathedral and Kaptol area a short walk east.

Zagreb is one of the safer European capitals. The Upper Town, Lower Town, and Dolac market area are all suitable for solo walking day and evening. The city center is well-lit and populated. Standard caution with personal belongings in crowded markets and tram stops applies as it would anywhere.

The Dolac market above Ban Jelačić Square sells fresh fruit, vegetables, and local cheese. The surrounding streets have cafes and restaurants serving strukli, a local pastry of baked or boiled dough filled with cottage cheese that is Zagreb's most distinctive traditional dish. The Tkalčićeva Street running behind the market is lined with outdoor café terraces popular for lunch.

Yes, and it is an easy add-on. Tram 14 from the city center goes to the cable car station (žičara) at Dolje, and the cable car runs up to Sljeme peak at 1,033 meters. The views back over Zagreb and the Sava valley are excellent on clear days. The trip takes about 40 minutes each way and the cable car runs regularly.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
