The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
Hagatna -- the name restored in 1998 after decades of being called Agana by American administrators -- is the capital of Guam and technically the westernmost capital city of the United States, perched in the western Pacific 13 time zones from Washington. With fewer than a thousand permanent residents, it is also one of the smallest, a fact that makes its role as a center of power and history all the more quietly remarkable.
The city carries centuries in a compact space.
The Plaza de Espana holds the crumbling ruins of the Spanish Governor's Palace, where colonial administration ran from 1668 until the United States took the island from Spain in 1898. Latte stones -- the ancient mushroom-shaped limestone pillars that the indigenous Chamorro people used as building foundations -- stand in a small park near the waterfront, reminders of a civilization that predates European contact by several thousand years. The Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica, rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II, is the first church built on Guam and still holds the December 8 procession honoring Santa Marian Kamalen.

Before you walk.
Start early, before 9am if possible. Hagatna's tropical climate means temperatures climb quickly, and the humidity is relentless from June through November during typhoon season. December through May is drier and slightly cooler -- still warm by most standards, but more comfortable for walking. The July 21 Liberation Day celebration brings significant local energy to the city center if you time your visit for late July.
Light, moisture-wicking clothing is essential -- cotton quickly becomes uncomfortable in Guam's heat and humidity. Comfortable walking shoes rather than sandals work better on uneven historic paving. Sunscreen and a hat are non-negotiable from mid-morning onward. A small water bottle is worth carrying; the heat is not extreme by tropical standards but the humidity makes it deceptively tiring.
The central plaza area and main historic sites are mostly flat and walkable. Hagatna is a small, compact city so distances between sites are short. Some of the older paths and ruins have uneven surfaces. There is no significant terrain challenge, but the open-air nature of the historic area means there is limited shade -- plan for sun exposure.
Guam uses US mobile networks, and coverage in Hagatna is reliable. Visitors with US phone plans will generally have service without additional roaming charges. Download your tour before you go, as the area near the beach and lagoon can have inconsistent data speeds despite good voice coverage.

4.8 across the App Store and Google Play. Here's a few we keep coming back to.
This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
