A few words on Cork

Ireland's second city, first in its own estimation

Cork people will tell you, with only slight irony, that their city is actually the real capital of Ireland -- Dublin is merely the largest. The 'Rebel County' earned its name from supporting the Yorkist pretender Perkin Warbeck in 1491 and later from its fierce resistance during the Irish War of Independence, when the British burned much of the city center in December 1920. Cork rebuilt and carries the memory. The English Market, a covered food market on the Grand Parade trading since 1788, is the physical heart of the city's identity: here you find tripe and drisheen (blood sausage), local farmhouse cheeses, West Cork smoked fish, and the best coffee in Munster, all under a Victorian roof that Queen Elizabeth II visited in 2011.

The city is built on an island between two channels of the River Lee, and the medieval street plan of Oliver Plunkett Street, Patrick Street, and the lanes around Shandon gives Cork its particular density.

Saint Anne's Church on John Redmond Street is known as 'four-faced liar' because each face of its salmon-shaped weather vane shows a different time, and visitors can climb the tower and ring the famous Shandon Bells for a small fee -- one of the more satisfying tourist activities in any Irish city. University College Cork, founded in 1845, occupies a Gothic Revival campus just south of the river that looks exactly as a 19th-century Irish university should look.

Cork FAQ

Before you walk.

The English Market on Grand Parade is a covered food market that has traded continuously since 1788, making it one of the oldest municipal food markets in the world. It opens Monday through Saturday from about 8am to 6pm. Look for Gubbeen and Ardrahan farmhouse cheeses, smoked fish from Frank Hederman, and the famous corned beef and spiced beef from the butcher stalls at the east end.

Yes. Saint Anne's Church on Church Street, Shandon, allows visitors to climb the tower and ring the famous eight bells, which you can hear across the city. A small admission fee is charged. The tower is also the source of the 'four-faced liar' nickname, as each of the four clock faces historically showed a slightly different time.

Blarney Castle, about 8 kilometers northwest, is the most famous nearby attraction -- visitors climb the battlements to kiss the Blarney Stone, said to grant eloquence. Kinsale, a pretty harbor town 25 kilometers south, is considered the gourmet capital of Ireland with excellent seafood restaurants along its quays. Both are easily reached by bus or car.

Irish Rail Intercity trains run from Dublin Heuston to Cork Kent Station in about 2 hours 30 minutes, with multiple departures daily. Bus Eireann and FlixBus also operate the route in about 3 hours. Cork Airport has flights from numerous European cities, and the city is about a 3-hour drive from Dublin via the M8 motorway.

The area around Oliver Plunkett Street, South Main Street, and the lanes between them has the highest concentration of independent bars, restaurants, and music venues. The Douglas Street corridor south of the river is popular for dining. For traditional Irish music, An Spailpin Fanac on South Main Street and the Franciscan Well Brewery on North Mall are consistently recommended.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
