The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
Valletta was founded in 1566 by Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette, the man who had just fought off the Ottoman Empire in the Great Siege of 1565, and he built it on a peninsula with the kind of strategic confidence that comes from having barely survived. Architect Francesco Laparelli laid out a rectangular grid of streets planned for defence and drama in equal measure, and the city was mostly complete by the early 1570s. Benjamin Disraeli later called it 'a city of palaces built by gentlemen for gentlemen,' and walking through it, you understand exactly what he meant.
Within just 0.
55 square kilometres, Valletta contains 320 monuments, one of the most concentrated collections anywhere on earth. St John's Co-Cathedral holds Caravaggio's only signed painting, 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist', its scale alone stopping visitors in their tracks. Strait Street, once known as 'The Gut', is where Allied sailors came to find jazz and trouble during both World Wars; today it has bars and restaurants but still carries traces of that theatrical seediness. The Manoel Theatre has been staging performances since 1731.

Before you walk.
The city is compact and most of it is walkable within an hour, though many of the side streets drop steeply toward the harbours via broad flights of steps called 'luzzi.' Comfortable shoes are strongly recommended. The main Republic Street is flat and accessible, but side lanes off it can be uneven cobblestone.
Malta International Airport is about 8 kilometres from Valletta. The X2 express bus runs frequently and costs around €2. Taxis and rideshares are also available and take about 20 minutes. The main bus terminus is just outside Valletta's City Gate.
Valletta is one of the safest capitals in Europe. Petty crime is rare, streets are well-lit at night, and the compact size means you're rarely far from other people. Use standard awareness on the quieter residential lanes, especially after dark.
Given the city's compact size, doing two tours in a single day is entirely feasible. A morning tour and an afternoon tour leaves plenty of time for a long lunch at one of the restaurants near Merchants Street or a rest at the Lower Barrakka Gardens overlooking the Grand Harbour.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
