Poland's origins run through Poznan. Mieszko I, the first recorded ruler of the Piast dynasty, built his stronghold here on an island in the Warta River called Ostrów Tumski, and his baptism in 966 AD marked the beginning of Christianity in Poland. The Gothic cathedral on the island contains the remains of Mieszko and his successors, making it the oldest church in Poland and one of the most historically loaded buildings in Central Europe. Poznan received its town charter in 1253, fell under Prussian control in 1793, and spent 125 years as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Posen before returning to Poland in 1918.
In the Old Market Square, the Renaissance Town Hall rebuilt between 1550 and 1560 draws people every day at noon to watch two mechanical goats emerge from the clock tower and butt heads exactly twelve times.
The mechanism has been running since 1551 and it remains, without irony, one of the most genuinely enjoyable public clocks in Europe. The square itself is one of the most beautiful in Poland, ringed by colourful merchant houses with loggias and painted facades that survived the wars better than most Polish cities managed.

Before you walk.
The goats emerge from the clock tower of the Town Hall in the Old Market Square at exactly noon every day. The square is in the centre of the old town and easy to reach on foot from most central accommodation. Arrive five to ten minutes early as a small crowd gathers. It takes about thirty seconds and is worth it.
The old town is compact and very walkable, built on relatively flat ground near the river. Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island, is about a 15-minute walk from the main market square. The broader city is well served by tram and bus if you want to explore further.
Poznan is a safe, student-oriented city with a low crime rate. The old town and university areas are comfortable day and night. Standard precautions apply around the train station area, but the main tourist circuit is relaxed and well-maintained.
Saint Martin's croissants (rogale swietomarcinski) are specific to Poznan and hard to find anywhere else in Poland. They are available year-round but most present around November 11. Pyry z gzikiem, a local dish of boiled potatoes with quark and chives, is the kind of thing that sounds underwhelming until you try it at a traditional restaurant.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
