A few words on Worms

Luther stood here. The Burgundians stood here before him.

Worms is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in northern Europe. The Celts called it Borbetomagus. The Romans built on that. The Burgundians made it their capital in the early 5th century, and their kingdom here gave rise to the Nibelungenlied, the medieval epic of heroes and catastrophe that still echoes in German culture. More than 100 imperial diets were held in Worms. The most consequential was in 1521, when Martin Luther refused to recant his theological positions before Charles V and was declared a heretic. The 1868 Luther Monument in the center of the city is still one of the largest Reformation memorials in the world.

The Worms Cathedral, a Romanesque imperial cathedral from the 12th and 13th centuries, is one of Germany's finest.

But the other structure that matters here is the Rashi Synagogue, first built in 1175 and one of the oldest synagogues in Germany. The Jewish cemetery at the edge of the old town dates to the 11th century and is believed to be the oldest surviving in-situ Jewish cemetery in Europe. Worms, known in medieval Hebrew as Varmayza, was a center of Ashkenazic scholarship for centuries. The ShUM sites of Speyer, Worms, and Mainz became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

Worms FAQ

Before you walk.

Worms has a mainline railway station with regional train connections to Frankfurt (about 50 minutes), Mannheim (20 minutes), and Mainz (30 minutes). The historic center, cathedral, and Jewish heritage sites are all walkable from the station in about ten minutes.

Yes, Worms sits on the flat Rhine plain and the entire historic center is on one level. There are no hills or significant gradients to deal with. It is one of the easier German cities to navigate on foot.

A thorough walk covering the cathedral, Luther Monument, Jewish Quarter, synagogue, and old Jewish cemetery takes roughly three to four hours at a comfortable pace. Adding time inside the cathedral or at the museum extends this. Worms is compact enough to see the key sites in a half-day.

May through October gives the best weather. The Rhine Valley can be very hot in July and August (above 35 degrees Celsius). Spring and early autumn are particularly pleasant for walking. The Backfischfest in August is Worms's largest festival and draws large crowds.

Liebfraumilch originated here, but for a better introduction to the region's wines try a local Riesling or Spatburgunder from the Rheinhessen vineyards surrounding the city. Several wine estates have tasting rooms in and around Worms.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
