A few words on Jaipur

Planned in 1727 and still pink after all this time.

Jaipur was designed from scratch in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, who commissioned architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya to build a city according to Vastu Shastra principles -- the classical Hindu system of spatial geometry. It was one of India's first planned cities, laid out in a grid of broad avenues and walled districts. Then in 1876, to welcome the Prince of Wales, Maharaja Ram Singh II painted the entire old city a warm terracotta pink, and that color has defined it ever since.

The Hawa Mahal, the Palace of the Winds, is a five-story facade of 953 intricately latticed windows through which the ladies of the royal court could watch street life without being seen.

It is less a building than an elaborate screen, built in 1799 for a specific purpose and now one of the most photographed facades in India. The Amber Fort, eleven kilometers north on a hillside above Man Sagar Lake, was the seat of the Kachhwaha Rajput dynasty before Jaipur was built; its Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors) is decorated with millions of mirrored glass pieces that turn a single candle into a galaxy.

Jaipur FAQ

Before you walk.

October through March is ideal. Summers are brutal -- temperatures regularly reach 45C and above in May and June. The monsoon (July-September) provides relief but brings rain. Winter mornings can be cold, but by midday conditions are perfect for walking.

Comfortable, modest clothing is appropriate, particularly when visiting temples and the City Palace. Sun protection is essential almost year-round. Comfortable walking shoes matter -- many heritage sites have uneven stone and marble surfaces.

The old city's historic sites involve uneven terrain. Amber Fort has steep paths, though jeeps also ascend to the upper levels. The Jantar Mantar observatory and City Palace are more manageable. The newer parts of the city have better paved footpaths.

Dal Baati Churma is the signature Rajasthani dish: wheat dumplings baked over fire, served with lentils and a sweet crumbled bread with ghee. Laal Maans (fiery red mutton curry) is not for the faint-hearted. The chai on Chaura Rasta is excellent and very cheap. Ghevar, a disc-shaped sweet soaked in syrup, is made locally and sold at pastry shops around the old city.

Download your tour before heading out. Mobile data works well in most of the city, but connectivity can vary in narrow old-town lanes. Free Wi-Fi is available at many hotels and cafes in the Bani Park and C-Scheme areas.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
