The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
Nijmegen has the oldest city rights in the Netherlands, granted in 1230, but its history stretches back much further: the Romans built a legionary fortress here in the 1st century AD as part of the Rhine frontier, naming it Noviomagus Batavorum. Charlemagne built a palace on the Valkhof hill overlooking the Waal River, and the Carolingian chapel that survives from that complex is one of the few physical reminders in the Netherlands of the Frankish empire.
In September 1944, Nijmegen was a pivotal point in Operation Market Garden, the Allied airborne operation.
The crossing of the Waal River by American paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne in broad daylight, using flimsy canvas boats under German fire, remains one of the most extraordinary moments of the entire campaign. Today the city is equally associated with the Vierdaagse, the International Four Days Marches, an annual walking event held every July since 1909 that draws up to 50,000 participants from around the world and turns the city into an enormous, good-natured outdoor festival.

Before you walk.
Valkhof Park occupies the hill where Charlemagne's palace once stood. The site includes remains of Carolingian-era chapels, including the well-preserved Sint-Nicolaaskapel. The park also offers the city's most panoramic views over the Waal River and the floodplains of the Betuwe region.
In September 1944, the 82nd Airborne Division captured the Nijmegen Waal bridge in a daylight river crossing under fire, a critical step in the Allied advance toward Arnhem. The Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum 1944-1945 in nearby Groesbeek covers this chapter in detail.
Radboud University, founded in 1923, is located in Nijmegen and enrolls around 23,000 students. It gives the city a lively student character and supports a range of cafes, bookshops, and cultural venues, particularly around the Kaisarstraat and the Plein 1944 area.
Direct trains connect Amsterdam Centraal to Nijmegen in about 75 minutes. From Utrecht the journey is about 35 minutes. Nijmegen is also easily accessible from Germany via Kleve, making it a natural stop on a Netherlands-Germany route.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
