A few words on Haarlem

Amsterdam's older, quieter, better-looking sister

Haarlem predates Amsterdam by at least a century and was for much of the Dutch Golden Age its commercial and artistic equal. The Grote Markt, a large cobblestone square surrounded by the 14th-century St. Bavo's Church and the city hall, is one of the finest medieval market squares in the Netherlands. The church itself took 150 years to build and contains the Miller organ that a ten-year-old Mozart played in 1766, drawing on its 5,000 pipes to improvise for an audience that likely had no idea they were witnessing something notable.

Frans Hals lived and worked here for most of his adult life, and the museum bearing his name holds the largest collection of his work in the world.

His group portraits of civic guard companies and regents of the old age home, painted with a looseness of brushstroke that looks almost contemporary, hang in the same rooms where they were originally installed. The Corrie ten Boom House on Barteljorisstraat preserves the family watchmaker's shop where a Dutch family hid Jewish neighbors during the German occupation; the hiding place behind a false wall in an upstairs bedroom has been kept exactly as it was.

Haarlem FAQ

Before you walk.

Haarlem is 20 kilometers west of Amsterdam and the train takes about 15 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal, running several times per hour. It is one of the easiest day trips from Amsterdam and the station is a 10-minute walk from the Grote Markt.

The Frans Hals Museum occupies two locations: the Hof, a former almshouse holding the masterwork group portraits, and the Hal, a modern gallery about a 10-minute walk away. It is generally open Tuesday through Sunday. The Hof building, a 17th-century courtyard almshouse, is itself worth the visit.

Yes. The Corrie ten Boom House at 19 Barteljorisstraat offers guided tours that include the original watchmaker's shop and the famous hiding place. Tours are by reservation and run several times daily; no tickets are sold at the door. Admission is free but donations are welcome.

Extremely so. The city center is compact and flat, and the routes south toward the tulip fields of the Bollenstreek and west toward Zandvoort beach are well-marked cycling paths. Bike rental is available at the station and from several shops near the Grote Markt.

Look for jenever, the Dutch gin predecessor, at the traditional proeflokaal (tasting houses) around the Grote Markt. Haarlem's independent restaurant scene along the Zijlstraat and Lange Veerstraat is strong on Dutch-seasonal cooking. The Saturday market on the Grote Markt sells local cheese, herring, stroopwafels, and seasonal produce.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
