A few words on Funchal

An amphitheatre of stone facing the Atlantic.

Funchal sits inside a natural bowl of hills that rise from the harbor to 1,200 meters, a city arranged like an audience facing the sea. The Portuguese arrived in the 1420s and named the settlement for the fennel ('funcho') that covered the valley floor. The Cathedral of Funchal was completed in 1514, making it one of the oldest still-functioning cathedrals built by Europeans in the Atlantic world. By the 16th century, Madeira wine was famous enough that Venetian navigators were writing home about it.

The city enjoys the warmest annual average temperature of any city in Portugal, around 20 degrees Celsius, which means the volcanic gardens terraced up the hillsides stay green year-round.

Winston Churchill came here to paint. George Bernard Shaw learned to dance the tango in Funchal in 1924. The cable car from the harbor district of Zona Velha up to Monte offers views that justify the entire journey, and from Monte you can take the famous wicker-basketed toboggan sleds back down the hillside, a tradition dating to the 19th century.

Funchal FAQ

Before you walk.

Funchal is walkable year-round thanks to its subtropical climate. Winter months (December to February) are the mildest for walking, as summer temperatures can reach 30°C and the hillside routes become more tiring in the heat. Spring brings blooming flowers across the terraced hillsides. The New Year's Eve fireworks over the harbor are famous worldwide.

Yes, parts of it can be. Funchal's streets climb steeply from the harbor into the hillside districts. The old town (Zona Velha) near the harbor is relatively flat, but routes heading uphill toward the botanical gardens or Monte area involve significant elevation. Wear comfortable shoes with grip.

The city has a network of yellow buses, and the cable car connects the seafront to Monte. Taxis and rideshares are widely available. For the audio tour routes, most of the historic center is walkable from the harbor. The toboggan run from Monte back down to Livramento is a unique way to descend.

Espetada (beef skewered on bay laurel sticks), bolo do caco (sweet potato flatbread), and fresh tuna are staples. Madeira wine is the obvious drink, particularly the dry Sercial for aperitifs and richer Bual with dessert. Passionfruit poncha (local spirit) is the bartender's recommendation.

Mobile coverage is generally good in the city center and harbor area. The hillside districts can have weaker signal in spots. Download your tour before heading out to ensure uninterrupted audio regardless of connectivity.

This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
