The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
St. John's sits on the easternmost point of North America (excluding Greenland), a harbor town tucked behind a rocky headland on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula. John Cabot may have arrived here on June 24, 1497. What's certain is that it became a permanent settlement before Plymouth Rock was a destination, before Boston had a single house, before almost anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere that English is spoken. It burned to the ground five times between 1816 and 1892, and rebuilt itself each time in colored wood.
Those colors are why people photograph the city.
The famous Jelly Bean Row houses on Gower Street and around the harbor were painted in vivid reds, yellows, and blues when the coal soot stopped darkening facades in the 20th century. Signal Hill rises above the narrows where the harbor meets the North Atlantic, and it was there, in 1901, that Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless message. In 1919, Alcock and Brown took off from a field near St. John's on the first nonstop transatlantic flight.

Before you walk.
Layers are essential regardless of the season. The Atlantic wind can make a sunny 18°C day feel much colder on Signal Hill. A windproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes (Signal Hill has some uneven paths), and a layer you can add or remove will cover most conditions. Rain gear is always sensible in Newfoundland.
The downtown and harbor area are very walkable, though hilly. The streets around Duckworth Street and Water Street are compact and interesting. Signal Hill requires a moderate uphill walk or you can drive to the car park near Cabot Tower. The Battery neighborhood is a steep but beautiful detour.
Fish and chips with Newfoundland cod (when available), toutons (fried bread dough served with molasses), and cod tongues are local staples. The restaurant scene on Duckworth Street is surprisingly strong for a city this size. Screech rum and a local Newfie Stout are the drinks to try.
Mobile coverage is generally good in downtown St. John's and along the main walking routes. Signal Hill can have spotty reception in some spots. Downloading your tour before you start is recommended, especially if you plan to walk the more exposed coastal paths.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
