The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
Constanta began as Tomis, a Greek colony founded in the 6th century BC on a limestone promontory jutting into the Black Sea. The Roman poet Ovid arrived here in 8 AD not by choice: Emperor Augustus banished him for reasons scholars still argue over, and Ovid spent the last decade of his life writing mournful letters from this remote frontier of the empire. A bronze statue of him surveys Ovid's Square in the old city, and the Constanta History and Archaeology Museum holds Roman floor mosaics spanning over 2,000 square feet, uncovered during construction work in the 1950s.
The city passed through Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Ottoman hands before Romania took control in 1878 following the Russo-Turkish War.
That multicultural layering produced a remarkable urban fabric: the Grand Mosque of 1910 with its 30-meter minaret sits blocks from the 1885 Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, and the Art Nouveau Casino on the seafront promenade, commissioned the same year as the mosque, is one of the most ornate buildings on the Black Sea coast even in its current state of partial decay.

Before you walk.
The Casino on the seafront promenade has been undergoing restoration and access depends on the current phase of work. Even from the outside it is one of the most striking buildings in the city, worth walking along the promenade to see. Check locally for current opening arrangements.
Mamaia is the resort strip that begins about 4 km north of central Constanta, a narrow peninsula of hotels, bars, and beach clubs on the Black Sea. Constanta itself is the historic city with museums, mosques, churches, and the old harbor district. Many visitors base themselves in Mamaia but take the short trip into Constanta for culture and food.
Yes, the Carol I Mosque is open to visitors outside prayer times. It was built in 1910 and its minaret offers views over the old city and harbor. Visitors should dress modestly and remove shoes before entering.
Late May and September offer the best balance: warm enough for the beach, quieter than the July and August peak, and more comfortable for walking the old city. The summer months are the most crowded and prices in the Mamaia resort area rise significantly in July and August.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
