The landmarks in every guidebook — and the tours that tell you what guidebooks don't.
Ploiesti sits in the Prahova Valley at the southern foot of the Carpathians, and the city's fate has been largely determined by what lies beneath it. Romania struck commercial oil here in 1857, the first recorded commercial oil well in the world by some accounts, and Ploiesti rapidly became one of the most important petroleum centers in Europe. By World War II, the refineries around the city were supplying roughly a third of Germany's oil needs, which is why the Allies launched Operation Tidal Wave in August 1943 -- a massive low-level bombing raid that cost 54 aircraft and 660 American airmen in a single mission, one of the most costly air operations of the war.
The city today is a practical, working Romanian urban center with a clock tower in the central square that has told the time since 1868 and an Oil Museum that is perhaps the most specific and honest industrial history museum in the country.
Prahova County Museum holds a respectable art and natural history collection for a regional institution, and the nearby Prahova Valley resort towns of Sinaia, Busteni, and Predeal are easily reachable for anyone wanting mountain hiking or ski runs beyond the oil-shaped plains.

Before you walk.
Ploiesti is about 60 kilometers north of Bucharest on the DN1 road, typically a 60-90 minute drive. Frequent trains run from Bucharest Gara de Nord to Ploiesti Sud and Ploiesti Vest stations throughout the day, taking about 50-70 minutes. It is an easy day trip from the capital.
Yes. Sinaia is about 40 kilometers north of Ploiesti and easily reached by train or car. Peles Castle in Sinaia, the royal summer palace completed in 1883, is one of the most beautiful buildings in Romania. The drive or train journey up the Prahova Valley itself is scenic, with the Carpathian foothills rising steeply on both sides.
The central Clock Tower (Ceasornicaria) on Piata Victoriei dates to 1868 and is the city's most recognizable landmark. The Prahova County Museum complex includes both an art collection and a natural history section. The central market is a good place to pick up local produce from the fertile Prahova agricultural plain.
On August 1, 1943, the US Army Air Forces launched a mass low-level bombing raid on Ploiesti's oil refineries with 177 B-24 Liberators. The mission was one of the most costly in WWII: 54 aircraft were lost and 660 airmen killed or captured. Five Medals of Honor were awarded for the mission, the most ever for a single air operation. The refineries were repaired within weeks, but the raid demonstrated the strategic importance of the city.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
