Konak is the old soul of Izmir, a dense district where the Ottoman bazaar world and the Aegean sea breeze meet at Konak Square. At its center stands the clock tower built in 1901 to mark Sultan Abdulhamid II's 25th jubilee, a slender neo-Moorish structure that has become the symbol of the entire city. Behind it, the labyrinthine Kemeralti Bazaar stretches for hundreds of stalls selling everything from spices to silverware, punctuated by mosques, synagogues, and hans that date back to the 17th century.
Above the square, the hilltop fortress of Kadifekale was already ancient when Alexander the Great is said to have dreamed of its reconstruction in the 4th century BC.
Down by the waterfront, the neighbourhood of Alsancak fills with locals at outdoor tables in the evenings, while the restored Asansor elevator, built in 1907 by a Jewish philanthropist to help residents climb the steep cliff face, still carries passengers between street levels in its art-deco cabin.

Before you walk.
A thorough walk through Kemeralti can take two to three hours. The bazaar is a genuine working market with hundreds of shops, historic hans (merchant inns), mosques, and synagogues woven together. Bring cash, wear comfortable shoes, and allow time to get pleasantly lost.
The Asansor is a historic elevator-building in the Kemeralti neighborhood, built in 1907 by Jewish philanthropist Nesim Levi Bayraklıoglu to help residents climb the steep hill. Today it still operates and has a rooftop cafe with panoramic views over the Aegean and the rooftops of Izmir.
The Alsancak neighbourhood, just north of Konak Square, is lively and well-populated at night, with a long strip of restaurants, cafes, and bars. Kemeralti Bazaar largely closes after dark, but the waterfront promenade and Konak Square remain busy and safe for evening strolls.
Konak is the transport hub of Izmir. Metro Line 1 stops directly at Konak Station, and the historic Konak Pier is a dock for ferries crossing the bay. Buses from all over the city converge on the square, making it simple to reach from Karsıyaka, Bornova, or Buca.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
