Yildirim takes its name from Bayezid I, the Ottoman sultan who earned the nickname 'Yildirim,' meaning thunderbolt in Turkish, for the speed of his campaigns. The district he left behind in Bursa is anchored by the Yildirim Kulliyesi, a 14th-century complex that includes a mosque, theological school, hospice, and public bath built in the distinctive early Ottoman style that emerged before the empire reached its full architectural flowering in Istanbul.
The entire area forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designated as 'Bursa and Cumalikizik: the Birth of the Ottoman Empire,' recognizing this corner of western Turkey as the place where an empire found its architectural language.
The Yildirim Bayezid Mosque, completed around 1395, is smaller and more intimate than the grand imperial mosques that came later, and its human scale makes it unusually accessible.

Before you walk.
Yildirim is one of Bursa's central districts and can be combined with the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami), the Green Mosque (Yesil Cami), and the historic covered bazaars in a full-day walking tour of the city. The districts are connected by tram and are walkable between them.
Yes, the most popular route is a ferry from Istanbul's Kabatas or Yenikapı docks to Mudanya or Bursa's ferry terminal, followed by a short bus journey into the city. The combined journey takes around two hours and is a more scenic alternative to the direct bus.
Bursa is the birthplace of Iskender kebap, a dish of thinly sliced lamb on flatbread topped with tomato sauce and browned butter. The city's covered bazaars also sell kestane sekeri, candied chestnuts, which make excellent gifts to take home.
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, with temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. Summer is warm but less extreme than coastal Turkey. The UNESCO sites can be visited year-round.

This tour was such a great way to see the city. The stories were interesting without feeling too scripted, and I loved being able to explore at my own pace.
This was a solid way to get to know Brighton without feeling like a tourist. The narration had depth and context, but didn't overdo it.
Started this tour with a croissant in one hand and zero expectations. The app just vibes with you, no pressure, just you, your headphones, and some cool stories.
